Cameron Brook recently returned from Nepal having successfully completed the challenge of a lifetime - the Everest Marathon – and here’s what he had to say about his amazing experience.
Dear CRASH team,
I’ve arrived home having successfully completed my first ever marathon. The race took place on 4th December and I finished it in 10 hrs 35 minutes and managed not to come last!
I was hoping for around 8 hours but a niggling knee problem I had been suffering from since late summer never went away so I had to walk the whole 26.2 miles. I managed to make the 20 mile cut off point with just 15 minutes to spare and hobbled to the finish using walking poles as crutches.
The race was tough but getting to the start line was tougher, as I was suffering the effects of altitude sickness and bitterly cold nights (-20 Celsius). Tougher still was the final 12 mile decent to the airstrip town of Lukla 2 days later which due to "the leg" took over 8 hours!
On return to the UK I discovered why I found some days extra tough. Apparently I went out to Nepal with diabetes which advanced during the exertions of the challenge!
Rather than having enjoyed the experience I prefer to say I endured it. I saw some great sights and met some fantastic people.
So thank you for supporting me and giving me a purpose to keep going when things got tough. I'm thrilled to have raised £2,252.88 so far which will be split between The Everest Fund and CRASH.
Will I do it again? Probably not but then Sir Steve Redgrave said after 4 Golds "if ever I get in a boat again, shoot me". He then went on as a fellow diabetic and won a 5th! Fortunately my wife doesn't have a gun!
Here are a few photos of my adventures – I hope you like them!
All the best for 2010
Cameron
