Total raised: £16,872.90

[Contract Journal]

Patron Contract Journal launched an appeal in their weekly trade newspaper to help raise funds for the CRASH Hard Hat Appeal last year. Nine companies from the building indusrty signed up and raised a grand total of £16,872.90! (read below on how the money was spent)

The nine contributors donated in different ways – e.g. a penny per order, employee, etc. Read more below on how the individual companies fundraised for the CRASH Appeal.

"It has been one of ACO Technologies busiest and most successful years and the Hard Hat Appeal has benefited directly as a result. With every order ACO received in 2006, the company has donated 10 pence to the Appeal - and with activity reaching record levels across all of its specialist drainage divisions, the total sum raised has been £1,352.90.

"The Hard Hat Appeal has been a tremendous success, not only in raising much needed funds but also in focusing the industry's attention on the plight of the homeless.

"Homelessness is an issue that is ever present in all areas of the country and can have far reaching affects on both individuals and communities. We are delighted to have been a patron of CRASH for many years and admire the dedication and resourcefulness of everyone involved in its projects. CRASH is a major construction industry success story that we can all be proud of."

Richard Hill, Managing Director

"British Gypsum is a committed long-term supporter of CRASH, providing, throughout the year, ongoing technical support, as well as product and financial help for many of the charity's homelessness projects.

"We were particularly impressed by the Contract Journal's 'penny' initiative, and, through our 'penny per order' pledge, are pleased to be adding £1,750 towards what I expect to be an excellent overall total.

"The 'penny' figure brings British Gypsum's total support for CRASH during 2006 to more than £20,000, and is a superb example of what can be achieved when companies and charities work in partnership for such an excellent cause."

Mike Jones, Managing Director

"On behalf of everyone at Buildbase may I say how delighted we were to hear that the grand total for CRASH's Hard Hat Appeal has been reached. Buildbase was pleased to be able to donate £1 per member of staff towards this total and make our contribution of £2,500 towards the fund. As a builders merchant we were keen to help a charity that is relevant to our industry and CRASH is a very deserving cause. Our staff and customers have contributed generously towards many charity appeals in the past and they have not let us down on this occasion. My thanks go to them once again for their support."

Kevin Middleton, Chief Executive

"As a long-standing patron of CRASH, Hanson PLC was delighted to support the Contract Journal initiative for the Hard Hat Appeal by giving £1 for every one of our 6,700 UK employees. We appreciate and applaud the work the charity is doing to provide facilities for the homeless and we continue to offer our support through cash donations and the supply of our core products of aggregates, concrete and bricks."

David Weeks, Head of Communications

"HBG UK Ltd has had a particularly active year in support of CRASH, including Dragon boat racing, Windsor half marathon, No Christmas Cards campaign, and Red Friday amongst others. HBG also signed up to the 'Contract Journal Appeal' in support of the CRASH Hard Hat Appeal by pledging a donation of £20 for every site achieving a score of 35 or more out of 40 under the independently-audited Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), of which HBG is an Associate.

"In the period January to end-December 2006, no less than 119 HBG sites were inspected of which a record 44 visits resulted in scores of 35 or more, generating an additional £880 for the CRASH/Contract Journal Appeal. Also significant was that HBG's overall average score (including four sites achieving 39) was 34.06, compared to the national industry average CCS score of 30.8 for year-ending December 2006."

Alan Smith, Public Relations Director

Specialist Mayfair builders, Holloway White Allom, are delighted to have sponsored Contract Journal's Hard Hat Appeal helping construction charity CRASH. They agreed to donate £50 for each additional £1m turnover in 2006 when compared with 2005. This amounts to £700 to reflect their dramatic £14m increase in turnover in the last 12 months.

"This has been a very worthwhile charitable appeal for us to support. We all know the work CRASH does in assisting homeless people is very positive. In our work for some of the country's most prestigious private clients and on leading heritage properties, we are often far removed from such social problems, so our links with CRASH through this appeal enable us to appreciate how fortunate we are. All Holloway White Allom employees join me in sending best wishes to those at CRASH and thanking Contract Journal for organising this excellent appeal."

Bob Cole, Managing Director

"As a long-standing supporter of CRASH, we have enjoyed being a part of the Contract Journal initiative which raised £420 towards the Hard Hat Appeal. Knowing that CRASH will use the money well makes the fund raising all the more meaningful."

Ian Stokes, Commercial Director

"Thomas Vale is extremely proud to have signed up to the CRASH Hard Hat Appeal in 2006.

"Our SPLAAT (Safe Play At All Times) talks are carried out routinely in the communities in which we work; this has enabled us to contribute to the wonderful success of the Hard Hat Appeal.

"Throughout the year, we have undertaken 57 school talks and have been able to proactively present and warn youngsters of all ages about the dangers associated with the construction industry.

"We have managed to raise £570 for the Appeal, which we hope will contribute in providing solutions for homelessness as well as raise awareness.

"As well as school talks, we also raised £200 from CRASH Red Friday, with one of our girls wearing red underwear for charity!

"Our work can span across various deprived areas of cities and it is essential that every one of us appreciates that homelessness does not just affect the disadvantaged, it can happen to any one of us, as any time."

Tony Hyde, Managing Director

"Last year Wates pledged to donate £1 for every £1m of turnover over to the Hard Hat Appeal. The figures are still being finalised, but we know it's been an excellent year and are delighted to round our pledge up to £2,000, which is 1% of the Appeal's target.

"Everyone at Wates has great respect for the superb work done by CRASH, but more than this we also thoroughly enjoy raising money for the charity. Congratulations to everyone involved with this worthwhile appeal."

David Smith, Chief Operating Officer

How the money was spent

CRASH has allocated the funds to cover the building work cost of its project in Edinburgh called The Rock Trust. The Rock Trust provides a drop in centre and supported accommodation to enable its young homeless clients (aged between 16 and 25 years old) to develop the personal, social and practical skills, as well as the sense of self worth, necessary for independent adult life.

The charity approached CRASH to help redesign its Underground Drop In Centre (see photos below). The Underground is a healthy living project to help improve the health of its young clients and provide facilities for training in the catering industry. It is located in the basement of a four storey building and they would like to knock down walls to create a shower and laundry facilities, and create a cafeteria.

The donation from the CJ initiative will help fund the building work costs of the much needed shower and laundry facilities. In addition, CRASH is seeking to add value by sourcing products from its supporters, for example, Glen Dimplex who have helped by making their electric shower units available at very charitably discounted prices.

Thank you to Contract Journal and the nine companies who supported the campaign, for making this possible.
