We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in the 2008 Manchester & London Dragon Boat Challenges. These two exhilarating and action-packed days were not only extremely good fun for everyone involved, but by taking part you helped raise an amazing combined total of over £43,000 for CRASH.
On Wednesday 4th June, the entire CRASH team (all 4 of us!) upped sticks and headed up to Manchester for the 3rd annual Construction Industry Dragon Boat Challenge.
This unique challenge, sponsored by Building magazine and run by Gable Events, saw 44 teams take to the water and paddle their way through a fun and competitive three round knock-out competition, on the smooth sunny waters of Salford Quays.
The construction industry was out in force, with 31 companies putting forward teams. Despite a couple of capsizes along the way, two thrilling semi-finals quickly separated the men from the boys and the final four teams took to the water, oars in hand, with victory in their sights.
An exhilarating and close-run final between teams from HBG Construction Ltd, Wates Construction, Bovis Lend Lease and Murraywood Construction Ltd proved a gripping end to the day's events, with the triumphant 'Murraywood Marauders' conquering all to clinch the title of 'Dragon Boat Champions' for the third year running.
They may have been pipped to the post in the final race but HBG Construction did come first in the fundraising stakes. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for raising a fantastic £2,475 in additional sponsorship for CRASH. The Mersey Dragons team won a sumptuous Chinese meal for the crew, sponsored by the Yang Sing Chinese restaurant. Special mention and thanks also go to Kelly's Heroes of Allenbuild Ltd, who raised a brilliant £2,300 in additional sponsorship for CRASH.
A fundraising total of £19,000 was pledged to CRASH on the day, of which we've so far received £16,575; crew entry fees alone raised £11,400. We're thrilled to announce that if we do receive the full pledged amount, we will surpass last year's total by over £3,000!
Just one month later on Thursday 3rd July the CRASH team ventured out once more, this time heading to North London and the 10th Anniversary of the London Construction Industry Dragon Boat Challenge.
Sponsored by Building magazine and run once again incredibly smoothly by Gable Events, the London challenge saw 38 teams battle it out on the West Reservoir, in a race against each other and the weather!
A small downpour here and there did nothing to dampen the excitement and enthusiasm of the crews taking part, well proven by a hard-fought photo-finish final between teams from Wallis Interiors, Stace LLP and Modus. With an incredibly fast time of 40.42 seconds, 'Staces Aces' paddled into the number one position; congratulation to the 'Dragon Boat Champions' from Stace LLP!
CRASH would like to thank everyone who took part on the day and also those individuals and companies who gave additional sponsorship. One team that deserves special mention is Modus Crew from Modus who raised an astonishing £12,000 in additional sponsorship for CRASH; this is not only the highest amount raised at that particular event but also the highest amount of additional sponsorship raised by one crew in the 10 years that CRASH has been the beneficiary charity for the Construction Industry Dragon Boat Challenge. We are incredibly grateful for this generous donation. As highest additional fundraisers, Modus crew won a delicious Chinese meal for the whole team courtesy of Encon Insulation.
So far from the London challenge we have received an amazing £24,261 in fundraising donations, including £9,400 from crew entry fees generously donated by Gable Events. We are absolutely delighted to have surpassed last year's total of £23,080; thank you so much for your generous contributions.
Both Construction Industry Dragon Boat Challenges are major fundraising event for CRASH, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part or sponsored teams. Every penny raised by the Manchester event will go directly to help projects for homeless people in the North West of England and every penny raised from the London event will go directly to help projects for homeless people in London and the South East.
