On Site at St Peter & St James Hospice

St Peter & St James Hospice is a charity which supports people with a range of life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers in mid-Sussex and Lewes.

The hospice building houses a twenty-three bed palliative care inpatient unit, a Wellbeing Centre and Patient & Family Services. It also provides a base for the community nursing team, clinical admin team, and administrative and fundraising staff.

Following an application for help with their building, CRASH visited the charity with Patrons Arcadis and Maylim. An initial assessment highlighted the need to address a drainage issue at the rear of their property. CRASH was also happy to undertake a health and safety audit of the building and its grounds and awarded the hospice a cash grant of £20,000 to get the project underway.

Maylim wasted no time in supplying all materials and labour to carry out drainage works. Whilst this was being completed, Hewden worked with hospice staff to review their Fire Risk Assessment and advise on any required works. Following their report plans were drawn up to develop areas of the Hospice grounds to make them more accessible for patients.

CRASH decided to increase the cash grant by £12,500 to £32,500 and called upon Patrons Hanson, A-Plant, VolkerFizpatrick and Buildbase along with Marshalls who responded by generously donating the plant and building materials to create a safer and more user-friendly paved area around the Hospice building. This part of the project is due to be completed in the next month.

St Peter & St James Head of Fundraising Giles Witcomb said: “Working with CRASH has been an invaluable experience. We have received support from CRASH’s highly experienced network of Patrons who have advised on a number of projects, adding significant value with their professional expertise and saving the hospice thousands of pounds.

“They have also provided a significant grant funding which has enabled us implement a number of essential projects across the hospice which will guarantee the safety and wellbeing of our patients and other stakeholders.

“The health and safety audit completed by Hewden was an extensive and invaluable piece of work for the hospice. Their professional expertise and advice was instrumental in saving the hospice thousands of pounds, highlighting potential areas of concern and ensuring the safety of our patients and other stakeholders.”
