Children’s Hospice can now help more children and their families
Wakefield hospice has been providing specialist palliative care in the heart of West Yorkshire for over 30 years, supporting more than 3,300 people each year. The hospice is committed to providing the highest level of symptom management and care for people who have an advanced active, progressive, and life-threatening illness. The hospice endorses a holistic approach in promoting quality of life for patients as well as providing continuing support to families and carers.
Wakefield Hospice applied to CRASH for help to repair their damaged car park which had suffered 30 years of constant use and weathering. The surface was uneven with potholes and extensive cracking, making access unsafe and difficult for patients, visitors, staff, volunteers, and deliveries. This was a particular problem for people with disabilities or impairments.
“Since the hospice opened in 1990, the entrance and car park has remained the same with no major works completed over this time. This space has given us nearly 30 years of good use but with regular, daily use by vehicles of all weights and sizes and weather damage, it is now a high-risk area within the grounds which cannot be avoided by those who visit the hospice…Our car park is the first impression of our hospice for new patients and visitors and is far removed from the standard throughout the rest of our grounds…Our aim is to provide a safe, suitable and sustainable parking solution for everyone who uses Wakefield Hospice for many more years to come.”

CRASH channeled the professional expertise and skills of our Corporate Patron companies to transform the car park at the hospice and ensure safe access for all patients, visitors and staff. Arcadis provided professional expertise and expert advice, whilst both Hanson and Marshalls donated materials to complete the works.
With the support of CRASH and our Corporate Patrons, the hospice car park was resurfaced, drains were relocated, the electric gate was repaired, kerbs were replaced and the parking bays were re-marked to include cycle spaces. The extensive works have improved access, safety and inclusivity of the space and will benefit the hospice and visitors for many years to come.
The total value of support for the project was a huge £27,684.
The money and resources saved on professional expertise and materials, combined with the grant awarded, significantly reduced the amount to be paid by Wakefield Hospice for the project. This saving means that the hospice and their staff can focus on delivering essential services to the local community.
“Thank you doesn’t quite seem enough for the dedicated support over the months and years which has contributed enormously to the fabulous end result. We’ve learnt a lot and have a car park to be proud of – one that will provide a safe arrival for all visitors to the hospice for years to come. The removal of the ‘island’ alongside the hedges and the changed positioning of the disabled bays much improves access to wheelchair friendly paths, and we have been able to create dedicated (motor)cycle spaces too, making the whole area more inclusive and safe for everyone who visits the hospice. We are so pleased with the end result and are truly grateful to CRASH for their contribution to make this a reality.”

“Thank you to our wonderful Corporate Patrons. You should all feel incredibly proud of what you have achieved at Wakefield Hospice. This project means patients, their families and visitors will be able to access the hospice much more easily, without worrying about parking or how to safely navigate their way from the car to the hospice entrance.”
