Hanson ‘races around Britain’ to raise vital funds for CRASH as part of their manager development project

Hanson’s Creating Engaging Managers (CEM) project aims to challenge the next generation of leaders in their business.

For one element of the project, Hanson incorporated their support of CRASH to deliver a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style fundraising activity to engage, develop and challenge the participating managers. Working in smaller groups, managers were asked to design and propose a charity event or activity to raise vital funds for our work with homelessness charities and hospices.

Teams presented their ideas to a panel of ‘judges’ including Hanson’s Asphalt and Contracting Managing Director, Gareth Day. The teams received scores and feedback on a range of areas including budget, marketing plan and presentation skills.

For the final part of the challenge, the group came together to deliver the idea with the highest score; the ‘Race Around Britain’ active challenge and present back to the panel with the outcome.

The challenge was to clock up 11,000 miles of exercise from colleagues across the business. They tracked miles on Strava, and each participant donated a set amount to enter. Challenges were set throughout the month with prizes to be won.

One colleague clocked up a whopping 22 hours and 40 minutes of exercise in Week 1, winning the ‘Highest total time of logged exercises’ in the week!

Colleagues could also sponsor participants and an online community that supported each other on their different activities and challenges developed.

The CEM team used project management skills to allocate roles and deliver the activity throughout November, overcoming challenges and problem solving. Together they raised a fantastic £4,017 to support a CRASH project.

“The Hanson ‘Race around Britain challenge’ pushed the project team out of their comfort zone and away from the usual day-to-day job roles. From sourcing prizes, promoting within the business, and arranging local fundraising events. We all had a huge sense of pride towards the event and raising money for CRASH and the construction projects they support around the UK. We cannot thank the participants enough for the effort they put into the challenge – through some awful weather, and to all that donated. Thank you!”

“Combining development opportunities in your business with fundraising is a great way to engage employees. Employees can come away with an even bigger sense of achievement, knowing that their initiative has helped CRASH to support homeless adults and people who need hospice care. A huge thank you to Hanson and the CEM project team, the commitment to fundraising for your industry charity has been remarkable.”
