Bury Hospice’s Essential Car Park Expansion

Bury Hospice provides compassionate care and support for individuals diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses across the six townships of Bury.

In addition to inpatient and outpatient services, the Hospice offers bereavement support, mindfulness sessions, and walk-and-talk grief support for families.

Bury Hospice also facilitates medical services like blood tests and chemotherapy in partnership with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust as part of outpatient services to bring treatment closer to home.

The need

Bury Hospice provides essential care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses, but limited parking has become a significant barrier for patients, families, and staff. Many patients, particularly those attending chemotherapy and blood testing clinics, struggle to find a space, adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult time.

The existing car park was often full, forcing visitors to park on nearby roads with restricted access. Staff, including the Outreach Team providing care in the community, also faced daily challenges in securing parking, which impacted their ability to deliver timely support.

CRASH was approached to help address this issue by creating 17 additional parking spaces using other available land on Bury Hospices grounds.

The project

CRASH Corporate Patron, Arcadis joined the initial visit and produced a detailed report outlining three key areas on the property where potential new car parking spaces could be and highlighting the various pros and cons of each option. This was also facilitated by Corporate Patron BAM UK & Ireland who captured Bury Hospice’s land from above, using drone footage to survey the area meaning Arcadis could use these images to mark out the areas with potential.

The CRASH Projects Team reached out to various patrons for support with materials and professional expertise to progress the project. Corporate Patron AECOM supported with the Project Management of the car park expansion since its start in 2021. Corporate Patron NG Bailey provided electrical materials including electrical vehicle charging points and lighting for the car park. Heidelberg Materials, also a Corporate Patron, supported with landscaping materials for the footpath areas. CRASH Supporter Marshalls provided concrete materials including kerbs, paving stones and foundations.

The total Gift in Kind value for this project to date is £196,475, which includes a grant from CRASH to support with the cost of the project.

A Personal Connection

“When I was first asked if getting involved in a project for CRASH at Bury Hospice was something I was interested in, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Being a Bury lad born and bred tells me that if you live in Bury, you will definitely know either a family member or friend who’s life has been touched by the fantastic work they do. Having been at NG Bailey for 27 years, I am always proud to be able to give something back to the community, but super proud that my role enables me to support such a personal project right on my own doorstep.”

“Having been a beneficiary of the CRASH patronage support with a hospice car park myself whilst at Renne Grove Peace Hospice, I understand how vitally important it is to have well-designed and accessible parking facilities to ensure a supportive and stress-free environment for patients and their families in what are already challenging circumstances. Seeking funding for car parks is never easy, as whilst essential, they rarely attract grant funding. CRASH are delighted to have supported Bury Hospice, not only with professional expertise and materials but also a financial grant.”

The outcome

  • Patients can now arrive with ease, alleviating the number of people late to appointments due to parking challenges, also supporting the day to day running of the Hospice.
  • Families can better use their time to spend quality time with their loved ones rather than searching for spaces.
  • The Outreach Team can now park in their designated spaces making it easier to carry out their work without unnecessary delays and focus their efforts on patients.
  • The Reception Team no longer have to track down vehicle owners who have double-parked and blocked others from leaving, ensuring a smoother and more welcoming experience for everyone visiting the Hospice.

“Bury Hospice is deeply grateful to CRASH Charity for making our new car park a reality. CRASH provided the initial funding, guided the design process, and brought together the right partners to deliver the project. The CRASH team has supported us every step of the way and shown great understanding, even when persistent rain turned our site into a sea of mud. Their invaluable contribution will benefit our patients, families, volunteers, and staff for many years to come. On behalf of everyone at Bury Hospice, we extend our heartfelt thanks to CRASH Charity.”

‘‘AECOM are proud to have been able to provide a range of pro-bono services for the Bury Hospice Car Park Upgrade project. It has been a pleasure working alongside the Hospice, SEL Environmental, and of course Vipesh and Ruth at CRASH who have been great in facilitating and coordinating the Patrons. Each of these patrons have very kindly gifted to the scheme and it has been amazing to see the generosity from all those involved in order to get this up and running for the hospice staff, who work tirelessly, and of course for the patients and their loved ones. That includes for SEL Environmental, whose pragmatism and flexibility helped make this scheme a reality. With Practical Completion just around the corner, we look forward to seeing the new car park put into use and celebrating it’s delivery with all those involved.’’
