A Garden of Comfort and Care at The Prince of Wales Hospice

The Prince of Wales Hospice provides expert care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses and their families in the Five Towns area of Wakefield District. Specialising in palliative care, they focus on enhancing quality of life through symptom management, psychological support, and end-of-life care.

The Hospice is also a valuable community resource. Each year they care for over 2,000 local people, offering round-the-clock support and helping to raise awareness and confidence in palliative care for those with progressive conditions, including those from underserved communities.

The need

The Prince of Wales Hospice had realised a growing need for a calming, communal outdoor space within their grounds. Many of their patients had asked for more time outside which proved to be beneficial to their mental health and wellbeing.

Due to this need The Prince of Wales Hospice approached CRASH for help on phase two of their Garden Project which was focused on replicating the patio designs from phase one for their remaining bedrooms and transforming a communal space outside of the outpatient suite into a useable, wellbeing garden.

The project

CRASH Corporate Patron, Arcadis joined the initial visit and their project advisor produced a detailed report highlighting the hospices next steps for the garden project.

Additionally, Corporate Patron, Heidelberg Materials supported with this project, providing high quality landscaping materials for the wellbeing garden and patio areas, amounting to 20 tonnes of grit sand.

The total Gift in Kind value for this project was £1,156.23 for professional expertise and pro-bono products.

The outcome

  • The Wellbeing Team will be able to provide gardening and other practical activity sessions from right outside the ‘Haven’ outpatient suite.
  • The Wellbeing Garden provides a calming, sensory experience for patients and visitors alike.
  • The new outdoor space creates the possibility for meaningful social and healing activities for years to come.
  • Employees who care for patients at The Prince of Wales Hospice now have an environment where they can unwind on their lunch breaks.

“We are so proud to see this vision become a reality. The garden is now a space that truly reflects the values of the Hospice – offering comfort, accessibility, and peace to all who need it. Watching patients, families, and visitors enjoy this beautiful environment is incredibly rewarding and demonstrates the importance of providing outdoor spaces that nurture both body and mind. We are extremely grateful to CRASH and Heidelberg Materials, ttheir generosity has enabled the Hospice to create a space that will serve as a sanctuary for patients and families for many years to come.”
