A new lease of life for an old barracks supporting homeless people and the wider community.
Many young people find themselves homeless as a result of family break-up, abuse or leaving care and have few life skills. Often they do not know how take care of themselves or be independent which is why the work of Cirencester Housing for Young People (CHYP) is so important.
CHYP provides practical and emotional support working with young people to identify their needs; be that help with literacy, numeracy, budgeting and life-skills. Life skills can include cooking, laundry, personal hygiene and self-care, as well as inclusion in social and leisure activities.
CRASH became involved with the charity when they needed financial help to build much needed communal space in the form of a conservatory.
CRASH awarded the charity a £10,000 cash grant which enabled them to realize their aims.
“Our existing lounge was too small for all our residents, and kitchens were just about big enough for cooking. The lack of communal space is an issue raised by our residents, and the conservatory enables the young people to enjoy the fruits of their cooking skills lessons, together. In addition to the conservatory, another room has been created for our staff to use for one-to-one sessions with our young people – an essential part of our work at CHYP. We are delighted that our conservatory is finishing and now in use! Without CRASH this just wouldn’t have happened.”
