Creating an Accessible Community Kitchen at The Shakespeare Hospice
Since 2018, CRASH and its Corporate Patrons have contributed more than £272,000 in professional expertise, construction materials and grant funding to support a series of transformational projects at Ashgate Hospice.
Working alongside CRASH, Corporate Patrons including Dulux Trade, Knauf, Bauder, Arcadis, British Gypsum, Geberit and Heidelberg Materials, as well as supporters Johnson Tiles and Heckmondwike, have helped create welcoming, accessible and future focused spaces that enable the hospice to provide the very best care for patients and support for their families.
Over the last eight years, CRASH has provided more than £135,000 in grant funding, alongside almost £138,000 worth of donated construction products and expertise, helping Ashgate Hospice undertake a number of significant capital projects. These improvements have enhanced patient care, increased accessibility and created spaces that enable people to spend precious time together when it matters most.
The impact of this support is felt every day across the hospice. Karen Walker, who manages Ashgate Hospice’s Inpatient Unit, describes the difference CRASH has made as “incredibly positive”, explaining that the partnership has helped improve the care and experience of patients with complex symptoms and their loved ones.
The first project at Ashgate Hospice supported by CRASH transformed three ward bays into nine individual patient bedrooms completed in 2020, giving patients and families the privacy they need while spending valuable time together. As Karen explains, “the creation of the individual bedrooms also enabled us to nurse people safely during the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that we were able to care for many more people during such an incredibly difficult time.”
In 2023 CRASH then helped improve accessibility across the hospice with the support of Dulux Decorator Centre and Heidelberg Materials. Through the creation of a fully accessible entrance, more people are now able to access wellbeing services, training facilities and the hospice café, ensuring equitable access to support for patients, carers and visitors alike.
