Bury Hospice's Essential Car Park Expansion
Securing the Future of Compassionate Care at Wigan & Leigh Hospice
Wigan and Leigh Hospice provides compassionate care and support for people living with life-limiting illnesses across the local community. The hospice has a 14-bed in-patient unit, caring for around 250 people each year. An additional six beds could be used if further funding became available, increasing the hospice’s capacity to support more patients and families.
Alongside in-patient care, the hospice is a vital hub for clinical and corporate teams, hosting training, events, and community outreach programs. A dedicated team of professionals and volunteers provide specialist palliative care in patients’ homes, ensuring people receive the support they need in familiar surroundings.
The need
Wigan and Leigh Hospice had an extensive area of the flat roof on their building with water ingress caused because of the roof leaking. This was causing damage to the interior of the building and preventing the area under that section of the roof from being used to its full capacity.
Due to this need, Wigan and Leigh Hospice reached out to CRASH for support from our Corporate Patrons with their flat roof project. The flat roof had reached the end of its serviceable life and required urgent replacement to avoid any further damage to the hospice building.
The project
CRASH Corporate Patron, AECOM carried out a PPM Survey for Wigan and Leigh Hospice in 2023 to support with the hospices budget and funding planning for the future. This report indicated the urgency and costs associated with the replacement of the flat roof.
CRASH reached out to Corporate Patron Bauder who specializes in flat roofs. Bauder agreed to support the project by providing pro bono materials and professional expertise.
The total Gift in Kind value for this project was £25,164 for professional expertise and pro-bono products.
The outcome
- The PPM survey conducted by AECOM in 2023 has enabled staff at Wigan and Leigh Hospice to proactively manage building maintenance, plan budgets effectively, and support grant and funding applications, ensuring the continuity of the hospice’s services.
- The new flat roof provided by Bauder guarantees the warmth, safety and comfort of the hospice for future patients for many years to come.
- The area of the building that was previously unusable to its full capacity can now be used as intended.
“The support we’ve received from CRASH on our roofing project has been invaluable. They worked with us right from the start to plan and then deliver the project, as well as providing discounted materials and financial support. The expertise provided by their Patrons is something we would have otherwise struggled to access. The comfort of our patients is absolutely paramount, so ensuring our building is warm and comfortable is incredibly important. During the work, the contractors have been so careful to ensure there is minimal disruption to our patients and services, and we are so grateful for that care and attention. This project will have a lasting legacy for the hospice and we appreciate everything CRASH has done to make this happen.”

“Bauder is delighted to have been part of the Wigan and Leigh Hospice project. It’s been a privilege to donate our flat roof materials and expertise to such a valuable cause. We’ve witnessed first-hand the amazing work undertaken by the WLH team of professionals and volunteers in supporting patients and their families. It shouldn’t be under-estimated, the positive impact that surroundings can have even in the most trying of times, and we’re confident the new roof will contribute to a warmer, more comfortable environment for both staff and patients.”

”The 2023 PPM survey by AECOM identified key areas for improvement at the hospice, allowing them to proactively plan for future building work. We were delighted to support this by replacing the flat roof, aiming for a leak-free building during the rainy months ahead! It was a pleasure to collaborate with Bauder once again; their team truly had the hospice’s care at heart.”
