Progress at Severn Hospice
St Giles Hospice is a registered charity offering specialist palliative and end of life care, free of charge, for people living with terminal illnesses, as well as providing support for their loved ones and carers.
They care for patients from across their catchment area, which covers a 25-mile radius (approximately) of Whittington, Lichfield and predominantly serves Staffordshire, North Birmingham and surrounding areas.
CRASH had supported St Giles in September 2024 with the help of Corporate Patron, Dulux Decorator Centre who supplied paint to the value of £3,350, for the refurbishment on their Inpatient Unit.
As demand for care continues to rise, maintaining a reliable and efficient hospice environment is essential. Prior to this project, the Whittington site relied on three separate boiler houses, each using conventional gas boilers aged between 10 and over 40 years old.
The oldest systems, particularly the four boilers serving the kitchen boiler house, required a replacement. With inpatient beds, outpatient clinics, family spaces, and staff areas all depending on consistent heating and hot water, upgrading the system became critical to safeguarding day‑to‑day operations.
Corporate Patron, Arcadis carried out a Project Advisors visit at St Giles Hospice, providing a detailed report on the scope of works along with suggestions for the next steps. Corporate Patron, Cundall created the design for the upgraded space, enabling St Giles Hospice to move forward to tendering and get started with the works.
The total Gift in Kind value for this project was £52,067, including professional expertise and a charitable grant of £10,000 made possible by our Corporate Patrons, fundraisers and the construction industry.
Elinor Eustace, CEO of St Giles Hospice, said: “Thanks to the generous support of CRASH and their Corporate Patrons, we’ve been able to significantly upgrade the heating and hot water systems at our hospice in Whittington. These essential improvements ensure we can continue providing a safe, warm and comforting environment for our patients, and their loved ones.

The project has delivered capital works to significantly upgrade the heating and hot water systems at their hospice site, refurbishing plant rooms 1 & 2 which serve the majority of the buildings.
CRASH Corporate Patrons, Arcadis and Cundall, generously donated their time and expertise to this project. With expert guidance and a clear vision, the hospice now has a modern, efficient and future‑ready system in place. The upgraded boiler houses provide:
“It was an absolute honour to support St Giles Hospice by leading the MEP team on the boiler replacement project. As a local charity here in Lichfield, it meant a great deal to give back in a small way and help get the heating system back fully operational.”
Electrical Associate at Cundall
“It was a pleasure to contribute to the boiler design, ensuring St Giles Hospice has a reliable heating supply in place to support the incredible work they do.”
Principal Mechanical Engineer at Cundall
“This project shows the real impact that skilled collaboration can have. Simon Hainsworth from Arcadis, and Daniel Floyd and Alex Arnold from Cundall brought invaluable expertise, enabling St Giles Hospice to upgrade critical systems that directly improve patient comfort and care. CRASH is proud to have been instrumental in supporting such an important project.”
